시인 김용택과 사진가 이흥재가 장터에서 만났습니다. 섬진강가에 살고 있는‘촌놈시인’ 김용택은 순창장, 갈담장에 얽힌 어린시절의 눈물겨운 추억들을 우리에게 들려줍니다. 초등학생 시절과 중고등학생 시절, 그가 장터를 두고 겪었던 슬프고 아름다운 이야기들은 메말랐던 우리의 마음을 따뜻하게 적셔줍니다.
사진가 이흥재가 다채롭게 보여주는 장터 풍경들은 잊혀져 가던 우리 삶의 옛 모습을 차분히 들여다보게 만듭니다. 사진 속의 인물들은 그들의 장터에서 물건을 고르고, 흥정도 하고, 박장대소하며 즐거운 시간을 보내거나 하며 우리를 장터 안으로 끌어당깁니다. 시끌벅적한 장터의 풍경이 고스란히 책장에 들어와 앉혀져 있습니다.
이 책은 50여 장의 사진과 시인의 산문을 함께 편집하여 장터와 장날의 의미를 되짚어 보았습니다. 글과 사진이 별개인 것 같으면서도 책장을 덮을 즈음에는 하나로 합치되는 주제 효과를 시도해 보았습니다. 10여 년째 장터를 기록해 오고 있는 장날의 사진가 이흥재의 사진은 현란하고 세련된 요즘의 젊은 사진가들의 사진과 달리 소박하고 구수한 무기교의 사진으로 평가받고 있습니다.
이 책장을 넘기다 보면, 시인의 한 귀절은, 장터의 왁자지껄한 수다 속에서 누군가 내뱉은 한마디가 마치 바람결에 실려와, 우리의 귀청을 때리기라도 하는 느낌이다. 그러면 화들짝 놀라 두리번거리는 우리의 눈길 앞에, 이 아주머니와 저 아저씨, 이 아이, 저 영감의 모습들이 한 장면씩 스쳐간다. 그 속에는‘여전하지만’어딘가 동떨어진 것이기라도 하듯, 친숙하면서도 소원하게 느껴지는 그런 모습들이 펼쳐진다. 그러나 이 여전함 또한 언제까지나 그러하지는 못할 것이다. 사진은 그 여전함이 혹시 마지막은 아닐까 하는 조바심을 부추기기도 한다. 그리고 이런 조바심이 아니라면, 사진이 그토록 여전한 모습으로 다가오지도 못할 것이다. ― 정진국 |
